Irakli Megrelidze was elected Vice-President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for the European Region
Irakli Megrelidze, Deputy Head of the National Environmental Agency, has been elected Vice-President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Association VI (Europe).
The nomination of the Georgian delegate for the position of Vice-President for the European region was made by the Bureau and the Committee during a congress held in Bucharest, Romania, with the support of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
It is noteworthy that last year, Irakli Megrelidze was elected as the Hydrology Adviser for the WMO European region. Additionally, he served as the Adviser to Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the WMO from 2017 to 2026, and was subsequently appointed as Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the WMO.
Irakli Megrelidze’s appointment to this position represents significant recognition—both of his extensive professional experience and of Georgia’s role in regional and international hydrometeorological cooperation. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) operates in the fields of meteorology, climatology, and hydrology. The WMO plays a particularly important role in climate change research; the data and analytical tools provided by the organization assist countries in assessing climate risks and planning long-term development strategies.
It is noteworthy that Georgia has been a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for nearly 30 years. This membership enables the country to engage in international cooperation, access modern knowledge and technologies, and strengthen its meteorological system—all of which are vital for the country's sustainable development and the safety of its population.
